About us

The Bharatiya Janata Party is today the most powerful political party in India and the biggest in the world. It showed it is continually growing in strength not only in achieving an unprecedented majority in the 2014 Parliamentary Elections but also in being able to succeed in becoming the most powerful ruling party in India.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has its origin in the founding of the Jan Sangh in October 1951. It gradually evolves through time into the present Bharatiya Janata Party that we have today. The first real session of the party as a revived and renewed party was held on December, 1980. This party has and still is producing many great leaders in both national and state level who has taken the party to new heights. Now no part of the country remains unrepresented in the party.

In Meghalaya, the Bharatiya Janata Party started its humble beginnings in the year 1991, i.e. a mere 11 years after its formation at the national level. It was introduced into the state by Mr. P.B. Acharya, who was then the one who was given the responsibility of looking into the party affairs and organizational strategy of North Eastern India.

The first President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Meghalaya was Shri M.S.Phyllut from Jaintia Hills District. Shri H.A.Roy Kharbuli from East Khasi Hills was the Vice President. The Party was gradually making efforts to grow strong roots in a new soil. The road was not an easy one but the leaders and the dedicated party workers toiled hard to lay down a strong foundation for this newly formed Party. Their hard work bore fruit when the Party manages to field a candidate for the Parliamentary seat form Shillong in the same year it was set up. Though the party did not win, it managed to get very encouraging results with a good number of votes. The outcome was the fact that the party made its presence felt and thereby making it known to all that the Party is here to stay.

With the party gaining strength from year to year, many national leaders visited the Meghalaya State Party. One of the prominent national personalities of the party who visited Shillong includes Shri L.K. Advani ji in the year 1992. This was a fruitful and productive visit as Shri L.K. Advani took time off from his schedule to interact with many prominent citizens and the party workers of the state in Bijou Cinema, Police Bazaar, Shillong.

The year also witnessed an important development in the State Party. It was on this year that Shri Thrang Hok Rangad joined the Party. With his sincerity and earnestness, the party matured, thereby moving further towards new heights. In the year 1993 he unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections from the then Laban Constituency. However this failure did not deterred him. Though disappointed he continued to be a guiding light to the party, thereby steering it towards the direction of triumph and victory.

Encouraged by the efforts of the State Party, Shri (L) Pramod Mahajan, a towering personality of the Party at the national level visited the state party workers in the year 1994. He also addressed them and some eminent persons of the state at Shillong Club. The lecture highlighted some imperative issues of the day.

The year 1998 was one of the best years that the party had seen. The State witness the Assembly Elections in which the Party managed to obtain three seats. Shri T.H.Rangad also won one of the seats. The Party, for the first time since its formation in the state, became a part of the Government in an alliance with the Regional Parties of the State. This alliance lasted for about two years and a half until the B.J.P. chooses to withdraw from the coalition. The Party legislators opted to steer clear from an alliance with parties that were tainted with certain allegations and also those whose principles are objectionable. This manner of conduct has been and will always be the motivating principle of the Party.

In spite of being in the opposition for the remaining term, the elected representatives from the party continued to serve the people of the state. This earned them a state wide respect and appreciation which ensured Shri T.H.Rangad of another respectful win from his constituency in the next Assembly Elections held in the year 2003. However this joy was short-lived as the leader who had helped the party taste the fruits of success succumbed to cancer on the very same year he was re-elected. The loss felt was beyond description to the state as a whole.

This loss was especially felt by the party and its members, in particular by the then President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Meghalaya State, Shri Werlok Kharshiing. Shri W.Kharshiing was the State President from the year 1999 to 2004. He has been a very active and dynamic leader who helped the party see through some tough times.

Another Party President whose hard work and dedication is commendable is Shri H.S. Syiemlieh. Shri Syiemlieh was the President from the year 2007 to 2012. During this span of time, he had been a pillar of strength that supported the party and never allowed it to wane even in the midst of adversity.

The year 2013 saw a rejuvenated B.J.P. under the leadership of the President Shri Khlur Singh Lyngdoh. The re-energized party witnessed the strengthening of weak elements in the party.

Thereafter, Shri Shibun Lyngdoh took over as the president of the party in the year 2015. A fresh and innovative method of organization was formulated, thereby preparing the party for an enhanced and better performance in the upcoming 2018 assembly elections.
